PPT
training programmes are based on participative techniques, which involve
the trainee in exercises and discussion rather than employing a lecturing
style. This has been shown to improve retention of information and
increase motivation and confidence.
Where in-house instructors
and course tutors carry out the training, PPT provides two courses
designed to give them the necessary skills to deliver effective on-farm
or classroom- based training.

This 1½ day course is for on-farm instructors who will be delivering
training using the PPT Pig Skills Manuals system. It teaches the use
of questioning techniques in order to get the trainee to think and deals
with the methods that can be used to teach a practical skill. It also
addresses how to correct trainee errors in an appropriate way and during
the course there is a focus on practicing new techniques leading up
to the delivery of one of the PPT Skills.

The 3½ day “Training Skills” course teaches a wide
range of participative techniques that are employed in the PPT Pig Management
Courses. This style of teaching has proved highly effective because
they involve trainees in discussions, exercises and other activities,
which facilitate “learning through doing”.
There is ample time during
the course for practising the techniques in small groups. The course
also deals with effective use of visual aids and the requirements for
a training venue. Sections of the PPT Pig Management Courses are used
during practice and by delegates for their final presentations.
The skills learned in this
course are not only valuable to the dedicated trainer but to anyone
involved in managing people, giving presentations, selling to or advising
customers and clients.
Once company instructors and tutors have gained some experience in delivering
PPT programmes, it is beneficial to have some further coaching from
PPT staff. This can give an enormous boost to the trainer’s skills
and confidence, increasing their effectiveness.
