This takes the Instructor through the steps
involved in explaining and demonstrating each skill and giving guidance
to the trainee, enabling him/her to carry it out correctly. An important
part of the training process is that trainees understand the reasons
for carrying out the task and the important points that need to be considered
to do it effectively.

Each
trainee has their own personal manual for the department in which they
work and also for relevant skills in the “General Skills and Health
Procedures” section. These provide an explanation of each task
in simple terms, giving background information, reasons why the task
is carried out and detailed guidance on the most important aspects.
The Trainee Handbook helps the trainee to prepare for both the practical
instruction and Understanding Review.

Once the trainee is fully competent in the task, he/she is interviewed
by the instructor following a structured series of questions provided
in the Understanding Review. This is to check that the trainee has fully
understood the reasons for, and the most important aspects of, the skill.
