The Pig Handling courses
and video have been produced by Nancy Lidster of DNL Farms Ltd based
in Saskatchewan, Canada. Drawing on the low stress livestock handling
methods developed by Bud Williams in the USA, the materials focus on
understanding pig behaviour and using it to move pigs calmly and effectively.
Nancy has spent over 10 years videoing pig handlers in barns, trucks,
assembly yards and packing plants. She has a wealth of knowledge on
what works and what doesn’t. Her approach is, on the face of it,
unconventional, but attending her courses or watching her video will
be a revelation, even for people who have spent many years working with
pigs.

People handling pigs are often pressed for time and can easily get frustrated
when pigs don’t cooperate. The resulting stress is unhealthy for
the handlers, the pigs and the pork industry. Humans instinctively act
in ways that make it difficult for pigs to do what we want. This workshop
gives handlers the knowledge and the tools they need to avoid problems
and move pigs more easily and with less stress.
Most pig handling
problems arise because of a lack of understanding of the pig’s
behaviour and how it responds to the handler. The Pig Handling Video
shows real-life situations to explain in detail the pig’s responses.
They identify the specific things handlers are doing that are either
creating problems or leading to a positive result. They show viewers
what they need to do to be effective and achieve calm, easy pig movement.
The video costs US$200.
